With his passion for formal technique and composition, internationally renowned photographer Nathan Coe’s works exude a deep reverence for the classics with a uniquely modern twist. Known for his lush, evocative, cinematic beach landscapes, in recent years Coe has introduced the unexpected in the form of subtle human intervention. For Coe, the inclusion of the nude female figure—often shown with her back to the camera as though she is blissfully unaware of the artist’s presence—represents the innate human connection to nature in its purest form.
Coe’s appreciation for the technical side of photography began from a young age, leading him to pursue a BA Hons degree in Photography & Media in Gloucestershire, England. After graduating, he moved to Nantucket where he became the Creative Director & Editor for N Magazine and fell in love with photographing the way the light illuminated the serene waves, regal lighthouses, and awe-inspiring dunes around the island. It was there that Coe also developed what is now his signature style, seamlessly weaving together what one might describe as a nostalgic nod to tradition with a forward-thinking eye for the contemporary. Celebrating the beautiful unpredictability of both the natural landscape and of the human body, each of Coe’s works capture a visceral, organic moment in time. Intended to be framed and hung in large format, his sprawling photographs appear almost like paintings as their sublime energy radiates throughout any space. He also offers his largest prints as single editions, making them true one-of-a-kind works of art.
A particularly serendipitous exhibition of Coe’s double exposures at Cavalier Galleries in 2014 propelled him into the world of fine art photography, cementing his status as one of the leading artists in his field while also planting the seeds for what would blossom into a now nearly decade-long partnership with the gallery’s owner, Ron Cavalier. In 2019, Coe and Cavalier established Coe + Co Photography Gallery (now C+C Photography Gallery) on Nantucket, and have since expanded to additional locations in Palm Beach and New York City.
Coe’s captivating body of work has been featured in Vogue, Town & Country, and Billboard, among others, and many of his best-known photographs such as Breaking The Rules, Colony, and Endeavor have become internationally recognized collector favorites as they sell out near the end of their editions. He also continues to produce new work, with his latest series shot on Nantucket between 2022-23. When he is not out shooting on location, Coe divides his time between Nantucket and Palm Beach with his wife, Kate, and their two sons, Seve and Leo.
Whether he is focusing his camera on the blurring of sand and sea, the slope of a hill or the curvature of the human form, fine art photographer Nathan Coe always strives to align traditional images with the current zeitgeist, often with a sprinkle of cheeky whimsy or deep reflection. Sometimes both.
Coe’s newest 2024 series "The Norton" will be featured in an upcoming exhibition titled "Repose," opening March 7th at our Palm Beach gallery.
Exhibition highlights include Rollercoaster, Dogwalker, and Cisco Disco from Coe's latest series shot on Nantucket between 2022-23, as well as with a curated selection of works that highlight the artist's enduring connection to the island.
